Merry Christmas...a bit late

We hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends. We are back from visiting family out of town and it is good to be home. We had a great time visiting with everyone and had really good weather too. Maggie did come down with a stomach bug at the end but it did not put a damper on our week. We received many beautiful gifts and are truly appreciate them all. Tim's sister, Ellen, gave us our FAVORITE gift this year. She painted the view from our backyard in England. It is just lovely and captures the scene perfectly. The view was what we all liked the most of the house, especially Tim. The photo does not give it justice but you can get the gereral idea.

Progress and Flowers

Today had been another fun filled day of haning drywall...NOT, but one has to pretend like it is fun. Tim has only a few more sheets to hang and will finish the rest after Christmas. There still is a ton of work to do when it comes to mudding and sanding but it will all be worth it.Around lunchtime we received a floral delivery...very unexpected too! It was from our friends back in England ~ it was appropriate they came in a Spode vase.

The Rock is Going UP....

You can really see the progress in the basement now! We have started to put the sheet rock up what a difference it makes. We started with the ceiling and since the photo was taken the wall on the right side of the room has been completed too. One other huge difference is that Tim took the poles out of the middle of the room and just replaced them with one larger one. It really opens up the space.

Dear Santa...

I received the following email from Maggie's teacher this afternoon. This is so cute... I am reading over Santa letters and here is what part of her's says...

"This year I have been thinking, maybe I don't need more toys I already have what I need. .... I will get lots of toys from family and friends and relatives. So give more toys to the needy than me, in fact don't give me any toys at all." ~ How sweet! Just thought I'd share. ~Katy

Now the big questions is....I wonder if Santa will actually listen to her?

Let There Be Light....

The basement remodel is coming along slowly but surely. We only work on it over the weekend so we are limited as to how much we can really get done. This weekend Tim spent the time with the electrical wiring of the overhead lights! He was able to get that done and then instal the mounts for the can lights. It is great to actually seem some progress. Next weekend we will be ready to start hanging the drywall on the ceiling...FUN FUN :-}

I found this custom storage unit while looking around on the internet and I want Tim to make one just like it. Our steps into the basement have the same set up and it would be perfect in our house. I just want the angled portion not the whole bar area too ~ it would be nice but it won't happen.
This is the entertainment wall piece, from Pottery B@rn, that I would also like him to make ~ with some modifications. He isn't too thrilled about the possibility of making these things but it would be cheaper so I am sure he will come around to the idea.

Violin Performance & Basement Remodel

This past week Maggie had her winter violin concert. She has been participating in a program at school via the local philharmonic orchestra. This is her first year so their songs are quite simple but she LOVES it. She was quite nervous before the concert and you can see the releif on her face when she is finished with her first song. There were close to 150 kids so it was a bit chaotic but very cute! { I have video to upload but blogger isn't cooperating at the moment....I will try to add it again later}

Tim has spent the last few weeks planning the remodel of the family room AKA kids area. somewhat finished ~ there is a dropped ceiling and two of the walls have paneling and the others are the painted cinder block.The basement is divided into two sections and we are redoing only one part. The other half is the work area/furnace/scrap/storage everything else room. On Saturday, Tim and I began the process...yep I used power tools. I must say they miter saw is a cool thing to work with. We have about 80% of the walls framed and it is neat to see progress. We were not originally going to drywall the ceiling but do another dropped ceiling but have changed to going ahead and drywalling it {YEAH...that is what I wanted} The goal is to have the room drywalled and all lighting done by the end of the year ~ then the painting and flooring done in early January.

A Busy Weekend...

We were quite busy this weekend as I am sure a lot of you. On Friday morning, black Friday, I got up bright and early 3:45am to go shopping with Diana!! Can I tell you how excited I was to be able to do this after our 4 years in England. I only had a short while as we were leaving at 8am to go to Wisonsin for Andrew's cross country race. The time shopping went quickly but I had FUN!!

The race was at the University of Wisconsin Parkside in Racine and the weather could not have been better. At race time it was 35 and sunny with NO wind...it actually felt warm when compared to the meet we were at a couple of weeks ago. It had snowed earlier in the week so Maggie spent her time playing in the snow and entertaining herself. Christopher enjoyed himself too but he probably would not admit it. Andrew ran in the frosh/soph boys race and he had a really good race. His final time for the 5K was 17:48 and out of 215 runners he placed 70th. This was his second best time for the year so he felt good about how he did when compared to other runners from Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan,North Dakota and Nebraska. There were a lot of runners :-) He says he would definately go again as he loved running the course.
On the way home we stopped at the Jelly Belly factory and hoped to take the tour...WRONG! The line was huge and we were not prepared to wait so we just went into the retail store instead and did a bit of shopping. We also went to a cheese place on Friday and bought some yummy cheeses too.

A New Door...

We FINALLY got a new front door this weekend. We thought we would have to order one as we wanted a right hand inswing but Tim was able to find one in the store. Yeah....instant gratification!! Tim didn't even wait to get started on the project~he installed the door last night. It looks so much better than the old one and lets a ton of light. We will paint it next summer when we do the other painting.

A COLD meet

Today we traveled for the Nike Midwest Cross Country regionals. The weather was absolutely MISERABLE!! The temperature was about 35 plus the 15-25 MPG winds plus rain it was the worst conditions the kids ran in all season. Andrew ran in the Frosh/Soph race and considering the terrible weather he did pretty well. This provided experience for running on the state meet course as well as run against the top runners in the Midwest from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Missouri.

Permit and Published

Looking back I can remember the significant milestones that the kids have reached: first word, first tooth, first step, first day of school. As well as the more exciting ones like learning to tie their own shoes, potty training and the ability to dress themselves! As they've gotten older the milestones are not so life changing but they still mark the passing of time: the first day of high school and today a new milestone ~ Andrew got his learners permit.

For an assignment in school, Christopher had to write an essay and submit it to a national competition. This week he received a letter informing him his essay was selected as high merit and is being published! In typical Christopher fashion he was not phased by this honor at all :-} His mother, on the other hand, thinks it is pretty cool.

I wish I had something exciting to write about but to be honest this week was rather uneventful. My first week at work went well...however, I got the first of what I think will be MANY colds this winter. I guess I will go ahead and get the flu shot afterall :-}

I did....DID YOU??

My civic duty has been completed and I voted today after work. Well... actually after I had my hair cut first. One has too look good when they vote :-} I had a very short wait ~ I was in and out in about 10 minutes. Tim has the tv on and it is amazing how the news networks are already projecting winners of states - that has always amazed me.

I will post photos from the cross country state meet tomorrow.

Maggie is 9!!

I am a day late on blogging about Maggie's birthday! Yesterday, November 2 she turned 9.
I was not on the computer all day and forgot about a post until I was reminded about it this afternoon:-}
She had a great day and received many presents...she will be sending thank yous later this week.

On the road to STATE....

And they are OFF....the cross country team left at lunchtime today to head to Indiana State University for the State meet tomorrow. The kids were very excited to be going and besides the event they were THRILLED with their BUS!! Prior to leaving the coach had some words of encouragement to say to everyone then announced the reason for the PIMPED bus. They had arranged for the mini busses to take the team but the athletic director said they needed to all travel in 1 bus so this is what he arranged...the coach has named it the Aerosmith tour bus as one of the coaches is name Steven Tyler :-}
Halloween photos to be posted later.....

Look What I Did Today.....

Yep....that would be ME! I will be working at one of the local elementary schools. It is not a classroom teaching position but I will be interacting with students. It entailes a few more hours than I was originally thinking but this is a good opportunity and I am sure it will be very rewarding. Now make sure you ask me if I still feel the same way in a few weeks :-}

Do you Etsy?

Oh my goodness.....if you are looking for a huge variety of handmade items then you need to check out Etsy. I have been to the site a few times in the past but it is now one of my favorite places for unique gifts for others OR myself :-} I have bought a few Christmas gifts already and I am sure I will get a few more. This is what I got for Maggie's teacher ~ isn't that the cutest key fob?? I also got one for the kid's piano teacher with a musical theme. I bought a few other items but can't tell you as I may give away what I got YOU this year.

On another note, the boys and girls cross country teams had a great day at the semi-state meet yesterday and advance to the state meet next weekend. The kids were so excited to make it to the next level....Tim gets home on Friday so he will be able to go with us to see the last meet of the high school season.

Dude....

Andrew had his Halloween team dinner tonight and they all went in costumes. I have to say this mullet wig is too funny on him...I think he actually liked wearing it. These kids really came up with some cute costumes ~ 1960's milkman, mad scientist, scarecrow and my favorite a group of 'Barbies' : trailer Barbie, vet Barbie, cheerleader Barbie and a few others.

It was my turn to bring a fruit so I made fruit kabobs and stuck them into a pumpkin. The peeps ghosts added just the right finishing touch to the fruit.

How Funny is THIS??

I thought I would just share something that is just plain FUN....it was emailed to me a little while ago and while I am sure this photo is making the email/internet rounds ~ here it is just in case YOU haven't seen it yet :-}

I really have nothing of interest to post about at the moment. Things are busy with the kids at school and having everything in the house almost put away from the move. This weekend the cross country team is running in the semi-state tournament and hopefully they will all do well and move forward to the state race next weekend.

Andrew has decided to run in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship Thanksgiving weekend in Wisconsin. There are quite a few members of his team who will be participating as well so it should be a fun weekend.

Name that Bird....

As Maggie and I were looking out the window checking out the fall leaves we saw this bird on the neighbors fence. Anyone know that it is??Maggie has been spending time with the bird watching book to figure out what it is...I think its some type of hawk or similar.
Check out this tree across the street...isn't it just beautiful??

Fabulous BROWNS....

It is about time....the team showed up to win and last night they won BIG!! No one expected the Browns to be even close with the NY Giants yet alone win 35-14!! To have such a game on Monday night football and at home is awesome. The Cleveland Browns and their fans finally have something to cheer about. Maybe this is a sign of the turn around that is much needed ~we know they can DO IT!!

Stupid machine

I bought this neat slushie maker a couple of months ago after seeing it featured on the Today show...well DON'T buy it! Maggie reminded me I had it after I kept going to the store to buy slushies for her as that is the only thing she is drinking at the moment. So, into the basement I went to get it out and use it for the first time today. The thing does not work....it turned the liquid a few times and then stopped. After going online and reading reviews this is a common problem with it and people do not like it. HOW ANNOYING!!!

Feeling Better and Dining Room.....

Maggie is feeling a bit better today. She still doesn't want to eat and I have to remind her to drink but otherwise she is MUCH better than she has been. Maggie says 'thank you' for the gifts that she has received.

Our new furniture for the dining room arrived today and of course I REALLY like it :-} It took a while to find some curtains that I liked to use as an accent in the room and finally found some last weekend. I spent the morning putting up the curtain rods ~ yes, I drilled pilot holes and used the wall anchors { Tim} so they are up properly. I did not want a traditional china hutch and the server I found just works perfectly. It has enough space to hold all of my stuff and I even have an empty drawer still. You can't really see much of it but it gives you a general idea.

NEW Personal BEST ~

Andrew had a meet today, which I did not attend as I was home with Maggie, and he had an AMAZING race. He ran a personal season best.....a 5K in 18 minutes flat! {23 seconds faster than his previous season best} He placed 14th out of 56 runners. He has really worked hard this year and it is paying off ~

Not SO Happy Camper...

Maggie is still have a rough time with her recovery. She did sleep throught the night which was a good thing. She was up briefly at 6am, had a drink and some medicine and was back to sleep until noon. She is resting on the sofa watching tv with the ice pack on her neck. She is doing great with having sips of liquid so that is a very good thing.

It is now 1:30 and she is asleep again....

So long tonsils....

**UPDATE: She is finally in a deep sleep. I picked up her new medicine this evening and it is working. Hopefully, she will have a restful night ~ me too! :-}**

Maggie had her tonsillectomy this morning. The procedure went well and was very quick. The doctor said that her tonsils and adenoids were worse than they had anticipated so removing them was definitely the best thing to do. Her recovery, on the other hand, is not as smooth. She is in a lot of pain and discomfort. We have called the doctor to get a different type of pain medicine as what she has doesn't seem to be working. Hopefully she will get a few good naps in today and she rest comfortably. I did not take my camera with me to document the pre and post surgery....

Why oh WHY am I doing this??

Yep, I am having a garage sale this weekend. I can honestly say this is the first time I REALLY am not looking forward to doing it. There is stuff from the remodel and a bunch of other stuff that needs a new home rather than the dump so hopefully my trash will be someone else's treasure. What ever is left at the end of the day Saturday is off to GW store...I am keeping NONE of it.

I am SO not ready~hopefully I will find some motivation in the next few hours otherwise I am stuck.

D@mn Geometry

Ok...having Tim away is REALLY hard on nights like this. I am SO not a math person and Andrew needed a bit of help with tonights homework. Once I got beyond the fact that I had NO idea what I was looking at....I was actually of some help. We figured out what he needed to do but the answer just didn't look right.

So we made a call to Uncle Scott ~ he has his PHD so surely he could help.....if he only was home to answer the phone! Then we made a call to grandpa and luckily he was of help and confirmed that yes what Andrew was doing was correct and so although he thought his answer was wrong he was correct. PHEW.....did I tell you I am NOT a math person??

Almost DONE....

The kitchen floor is ALMOST completed and I am very pleased with how it has turned out. There is one small area left to do, by the front door, but we ran out of one size of tile so need to wait for it to come in. Otherwise....it is done. The grout photographs much lighter than it really is but you can get a general idea of how it looks.
Andrew had a meet today at Culver Academy so we made the 2.5 hour drive up to see him run. The campus was beautiful...it looked like a college campus. This was the largest meet they have participated in so far this year ~ there were 69 teams participating with 29 of them in their group. He ran in the freshman/sophomore 5K race and finished 79th out of 289 with a time of 18.31. The competing teams today were a much higher caliber than they have faced all season.. as a team, the 7 boys from his school, placed 9th out of 29 so not too bad.

Check it out...

Just a quick post to show the progress of the floor so far. This is really for Tim's benefit as he is not here to see it all being done. He just gets to see the finished project when he show up in town :-}

Maggie School Picture

Maggie has just now let me know she got her school pictures back. HELLO>>>>>>does she now know she should have told me HOURS ago about this?? Anyway....it turned out very nice. What I don't like is the photo studio has their logo on the front of the photo and the school year on it ~ I will have to hide that part with a frame.

A Better Day and OPINIONS please

The tile guy showed up bright and early this morning at 8am and worked all day. Today there doesn't seem to be too much progress as it was mainly a prep day ~ take off doors, move laundry machine, floor boards etc. Tomorrow we should see even more progress.In the move back our family room furniture was damaged and as a result we get to have it recovered. I found this print fabric and really like it - I want to use it on the ottoman and the throw pillows. SO this means that I need to find the right solid color to go on the sofa and loveseat....here is what I am looking at....tell me what you think? ALL input is greatly appreciated - who knows I may completely change my mind :-) The solid fabric is an awesome microfiber and boy is it soft. The colors are not showing as a true representation of how they look but you can get a general idea.
